Pets Have Been Banned

The Saudi Gazette is reporting that there is now a BAN in Riyadh on keeping dogs, cats as pets

According to Saudi Gazette, the ban follows complaints
received by the Commision for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

Apparently, in Riyadh there is a “ ising phenomenon of men using cats and dogs to make passes at women and pester families,” said Commission General Manager, Othman Al-Othman.
He said such behavior in public squares and malls was improper.
The ban was ordered by Acting Governor of Riyadh, Prince Sattam Bin Abdul Aziz, following an edict from the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars.
“If a man is caught with a pet, the pet will be immediately confiscated and the man will be forced to sign a document pledging not to repeat the act,” Al-Othman told Al-Hayat Arabic newspaper.

A similar ban issued Aug. 2006 for the Makkah region banned the sale of dogs and cats as pets.
According to the Saudi Gazette, Muslims are discouraged from keeping dogs inside their homes because they are considered to be unclean.

In case you missed it. NASA Brings Total Eclipse of the Sun to the Masses

Image of Aug 1 2008 solar eclipse
7:10 a.m. -- Totality.

There was a total solar eclipse this morning. It was visible in parts of Canada, northern Greenland, the Arctic, central Russia, Mongolia and China. A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes directly between Earth and the sun. When the moon's shadow falls on Earth, people within that shadow see the moon block a portion of the sun's light.

Though the eclipse was not visible in most of North America, NASA TV and the Exploratorium made streaming video of the event available online. The following images are taken from that video. The sun appears differently in some of the images because of the different filters used to capture the event. Times listed are ET and approximate.

China reacts to Censorship Flack

Olympic organizers unblocked some Internet sites at the main press center and media venues while others remained off limits for journalists covering the Beijing games. To some the move falls short of the "free and unfettered access" the organizers and Chinese officials had promised for months. It was an improvement from earlier in the week when sites for the likes of Amnesty International or Tiananmen Square could not be opened.

Kevan Gosper, the press commission head of the IOC, said the IOC and Chinese officials were working toward "unblocking sites that we believe were unreasonably blocked." "I would suggest also that we are not working in a democratic society, we're working in a communist society. This is China, and they are proud to be a communist society. So it will be different."

Amnesty International's site was open on Friday, but links to the banned spiritual movement Falun Gong remained closed. Some Web sites dealing with Tibet were open, but others tied to the restive region in the west of China were blocked. The BBC's Chinese-language site was open at times, but frequently unavailable.

This partial view of a full-circle panorama shows NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander and the polygonal patterning of the ground at the landing area. The image is in approximately true color.
Laboratory tests aboard NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander have identified water in a soil sample. The lander's robotic arm delivered the sample Wednesday to an instrument that identifies vapors produced by the heating of samples.

"We have water," said William Boynton of the University of Arizona, lead scientist for the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer, or TEGA. "We've seen evidence for this water ice before in observations by the Mars Odyssey orbiter and in disappearing chunks observed by Phoenix last month, but this is the first time Martian water has been touched and tasted."
