The Problems stemmed from Poppies: opium marriages to settle debts.


In an effort to put the Taliban out of business, the Afghan government eradicated almost 16,000 hectares (40,000 acres) of poppies last year. The country's farmers still grew 193,000 hectares (477,000 acres) of poppies . Attacks on poppy eradication teams by Taliban supporters are common. The Taliban has been known to have been funded mostly from the heroin market thanks to these poppies.

Afghanistan last year produced 93 percent of the world's opium, the main ingredient in heroin. The US has fought this in an effort to cut the Taliban funding. The result? Peasant farmers have been settling their debts with what Afghans disparagingly call them "loan brides" -- daughters given in marriage by fathers who have no other way out of debt. These daughter may be as young as months old but, are commonly as young as 9 years old. They are forced to marry men many years older than they are.

Switching gears...
American Airlines canceled more than 900 flights to fix faulty wiring in hundreds of jets. This is the third straight day of mass groundings as company executives offered profuse apologies and travel vouchers to calm angry customers.

In Oregon, A cleaning woman showed up to work drunk. Unfortunately for her, she works for the Oregon State Police department. She was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants. A trooper said she showed signs of being intoxicated after driving to the office with her 12-year-old son. A blood-alcohol test showed her level was 0.19 percent — more than twice the legal limit. She was also charged with recklessly endangering another person.
