As if we hadn't noticed with Gustav, then Hanna. Now there are four more trouble spots all lined up in the Atlantic.

Powerful winds lashed the largely deserted Louisiana as the Eye of Gustav nears landfall west of New Orleans. Gustav is 20 miles from Port Fourchon; 85 from New Orleans . Landfall expected at midday near New Orleans. Gustav's winds 115 mph making it a Category 3 storm.

Political News

Republicans canceled their prime-time program for the convention's first night and most of their daytime activities. What remains are those activities aimed at the formal business of nominating a president and vice president, something they have to do. John McCain and GOP officials sought to show concern for those in Gustav's path rather than show the usual festivities.

President Bush has responded this time. Bush will be in his home states of Texas, a staging ground for emergency response efforts and a shelter state for Gulf Coast evacuees.

Good News for Batman
"The Dark Knight" became the second movie in Hollywood history to top $500 million at the domestic box office, raising its total to $502.4 million, according to estimates from distributor Warner Bros.

The film hit that mark in just over six weeks, half the time it took "Titanic " to do so. IT took Titanic little more than three months. "Titanic," the biggest modern blockbuster, remains No. 1 on the domestic charts with $600.8 million.
